Power Steering Gear Replacement

Removal Procedure

Notice: Set steering shaft so the block tooth on the upper steering shaft is at the 12 o'clock position, the wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead and set the ignition switch to the LOCK position. Failure to follow these procedures could result in damage to the coil.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.





2. Remove the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement.
3. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement - Outer.
4. Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Lower/Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement Steering Column- Tilt.
5. Use a utility stand in order to support the frame.
6. Remove and DISCARD the frame rear bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement in Body and Frame.

Notice: Do not lower the rear of the frame too far as damage to the engine components nearest to the cowl may result.

7. Use the utility stand in order to lower the frame and the powertrain.
8. Remove the power steering gear heat shield. Refer to Power Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement
9. Remove the power steering gear cooler pipe from the steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Cooler Pipe/Hose Replacement.





10. Remove the power steering gear pressure hose from the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Hose Replacement





11. Remove the power steering gear bolts and nuts.
12. Remove the power steering gear through the vehicle left side wheel opening.

Installation Procedure
1. Install the power steering gear through the vehicle left side wheel opening to the frame.





2. Install the power steering gear bolts.

Important: This is a prevailing torque type fastener. This fastener may be reused ONLY if:
- The fastener and its counterpart are clean and free from rust
- The fastener develops 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.) of torque (drag) against its counterpart prior to the fastener seating.

If the fastener does not meet these criteria, REPLACE the fastener.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the power steering gear nuts.
- Tighten the power steering gear nuts to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).





4. Install the power steering gear pressure hose to the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Hose Replacement





5. Install the power steering gear cooler pipe to the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Cooler Pipe/Hose Replacement.
6. Install the power steering gear cooler pipe retaining clip.
7. Install the power steering gear heat shield. Refer to Power Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement
8. Use the utility stand in order to raise the frame and the powertrain.
9. Install the NEW frame rear bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement in Body and Frame.
10. Remove the utility stand from the frame.
11. Install the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Lower/Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement Steering Column- Tilt.
12. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement - Outer.
13. Install the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement.
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Fill the power steering system. Refer to Refilling the Power Steering System.
16. Bleed the air from the system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System.
17. Inspect the system for leaks. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump Leaks.
18. Inspect and adjust the toe as necessary. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment.
