Test G: Tachometer Inaccurate Or Inoperative

  1. Perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
  2. Start engine. Verify fault is present in tachometer. If tachometer operates properly, check for poor connections or intermittent conditions and repair as necessary. If tachometer does not operate properly, go to next step.
  3. Turn engine off. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan tool, sweep tachometer. If tachometer needle does not sweep, go to next step. If tachometer needle moves from zero RPM to 7000 RPM, and back to zero RPM during tachometer sweep, perform on-board diagnostic procedure. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Contact an authorized A/C Delco service center for transfer of information from failed Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) or affix appropriate label with necessary vehicle information on driver door pillar. Go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Restore any previously disconnected components or connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Operate system to verify repair is complete. If fault remains, go to step  2 .
