Test H: Change Engine Oil Message Always On

  1. Perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select PCM data list. Observe engine oil life percentage value. If value is zero percent and change oil message is displayed, go to next step. If value is not zero percent and change oil message is displayed, go to step  4 .
  3. Reset GM oil life system. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Wait 30 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Fully depress and release accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds. The change oil soon message should flash 2 times, and system should reset. If change oil indicator comes on and stays on for 5 seconds, attempt to reset system again. After system has been reset, go to step  5
  4. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Contact an authorized A/C Delco service center for transfer of information from failed Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) or affix appropriate label with necessary vehicle information on driver door pillar. Go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool, observe engine oil life percentage value. If value is 100 percent and change oil message is not displayed, system is okay. If value is not 100 percent and change oil message is displayed, perform self-diagnostics of Powertrain Control Module (PCM). See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
