The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) generates an AC signal with frequency proportional to vehicle speed. This square wave signal is interpreted by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). PCM converts this signal to a frequency of 4000 pulses per mile to drive speedometer/odometer.
