Test 3: Engine Oil Pressure Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative
NOTE:
Ensure oil level is correct before performing any testing procedures.
- Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK before proceeding. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SYSTEM TEST. If INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK has been performed, go to next step.
- Start engine. Ensure engine oil pressure gauge is inaccurate or inoperative. If engine oil pressure gauge does not operate properly, go to next step. If engine oil pressure gauge is operating properly, check for an intermittent problem caused by poor connections, a break in wire insulation, or a broken wire inside insulation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- If oil pressure gauge stays at more than 80 psi (550 kPa), go to step 6. If oil pressure gauge does not stay at more than 80 psi (550 kPa) go to next step.
- If oil pressure gauge stays at "0", go to step 8. If oil pressure gauge does not stay at "0", go to next step.
- Check engine mechanical condition. Ensure engine develops adequate oil pressure. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect engine Oil Pressure Sensor (OPS) connector. Connect Signal Generator/Instrument Panel Tester (J-33431-C) between ground and OPS connector terminal "A", OPS signal circuit (Tan/White wire). Turn ignition switch to ON position. While monitoring oil pressure gauge, adjust tester from zero ohms to 100 ohms, then back to zero ohms. At zero ohms, oil pressure gauge should be at zero. At 100 ohms, oil pressure gauge should be at maximum pressure. If oil pressure gauge operates properly, go to step 12. If oil pressure gauge does not operate properly, go to step 13.
- Check engine mechanical condition. Ensure engine develops adequate oil pressure. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect engine Oil Pressure Sensor (OPS) connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a voltmeter connected to ground, check voltage on OPS connector terminal "A", OPS signal circuit (Tan/White wire). If voltage is 7.0-9.5 volts, go to step 12. If voltage is not 7.0-9.5 volts, go to next step.
- Using voltmeter connected to ground, backprobe IPC connector terminal A1, OPS signal circuit (Tan/White wire). If voltage is 7.0-9.5 volts, go to step 11. If voltage is not 7.0-9.5 volts, go to step 13.
- Check engine mechanical condition. Ensure engine develops adequate oil pressure. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect engine Oil Pressure Sensor (OPS) connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If oil pressure gauge stays at more than 80 psi (550 kPa), go to step 12. If oil pressure gauge does not stay at more than 80 psi (550 kPa), go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect IPC connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect a test light between IPC connector terminal A1, OPS signal circuit (Tan/White wire) and battery voltage. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 14.
- Repair short to ground in Tan/White wire between OPS and IPC. After repair, go to step 16.
- Repair open Tan/White wire. After repair, go to step 16.
- Replace OPS. After repair, go to step 16.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect IPC connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter connected to ground, backprobe IPC connector terminal A1, OPS signal circuit (Tan/White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step 15. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step 16.
- Repair short to battery in Tan/White wire. After repair, go to next step.
- Recheck system operation. If OPS gauge is now operating properly, system is okay. If OPS gauge is not operating properly, return to step 3.
