Test 2: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative
- Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK before proceeding. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SYSTEM TEST. If INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK has been performed, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure ECT gauge is inaccurate or inoperative. If ECT gauge does not operate properly, go to next step. If ECT gauge is operating properly, check for an intermittent problem caused by poor connections, a break in wire insulation, or a broken wire inside insulation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select DATA DISPLAY, then DATA. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Compare displayed DATA with ECT gauge reading. If scan tool display agrees with ECT gauge reading, go to next step. If scan tool display does not agree with ECT gauge reading, go to step 7.
- Using scan tool, read MONITORED COOLANT TEMP. If scan tool displays 100-260°F (37.8-126.7°C), go to next step. If scan tool does not display 100-260°F (37.8-126.7°C), go to step 6.
- Compare displayed MONITORED COOLANT TEMP with ECT gauge reading. If scan tool display agrees with ECT gauge reading, go to next step. If scan tool display does not agree with ECT gauge reading, go to step 7.
- If scan tool display is less than 100°F (37.C), ECT gauge should be at or near lowest reading. If scan tool display is more than 260°F (126.7°C), ECT gauge should be at or near maximum reading. If ECT gauge is not operating properly, go to next step. If ECT gauge is operating properly, check for an intermittent problem caused by poor connections, a break in wire insulation, or a broken wire inside insulation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
- Recheck system operation. If ECT gauge is now operating properly, system is okay. If ECT gauge is not operating properly, return to step 3.
NOTE:
ECT gauge remains at 200°F (93.3°C) if actual engine coolant temperature is 190-220°F (87.8-104.5°C).
