Test 19: Automatic Transmission Gear Position (PRND321) Display Inoperative

  1. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK before proceeding. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TEST. If INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Move shift lever into Park. If gear position display identifies correct gear position, check for an intermittent problem caused by poor connections, a break in wire insulation, or a broken wire inside insulation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If gear position display does not identify gear position correctly, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER, SPECIAL FUNCTIONS, then PRND321 DISPLAY. Using scan tool, read PARK SWITCH parameter. If scan tool displays CLOSED with shift lever in Park, go to appropriate transmission range switch diagnostic test. See appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If scan tool does not display CLOSED with shift lever in Park, go to next step.
  4. Remove upper and lower steering column trim covers. Disconnect park switch connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and park switch connector terminal, park switch signal circuit (Dark Green/White wire). Using scan tool, read PARK SWITCH parameter. If scan tool displays CLOSED, go to step  6. If scan tool does not display CLOSED, go to next step.
  5. Check park switch connector, park switch signal circuit (Dark Green/White wire) for open or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair Dark Green/White wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  9. If Dark Green/White wire is okay, go to step  8.
  6. Check park switch connector, ground circuit (Black wire) for open or high resistance. WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  9. If Black wire is okay, go to next step.
  7. Replace Park switch. See PARK SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  9.
  8. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  9. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Move shift lever through all gear positions. If gear position display identifies correct gear position, stem is okay. If gear position display does not identify correct gear position, return to step  3.
