Test 17: Low Fuel Message Inoperative

  1. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK before proceeding. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TEST. If INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If LOW FUEL message illuminates briefly, check for an intermittent problem caused by poor connections, a break in wire insulation, or a broken wire inside insulation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If LOW FUEL message does not illuminate briefly, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER, SPECIAL FUNCTIONS, then LIGHT TEST. Using scan tool, command LOW FUEL MESSAGE on, then off. IF LOW FUEL MESSAGE does not come on and off as commanded, go to next step. IF LOW FUEL MESSAGE comes on and off as commanded, go to TEST 4: FUEL GAUGE INACCURATE OR INOPERATIVE (SINGLE TANK)  or TEST 5: FUEL GAUGE INACCURATE OR INOPERATIVE (DUAL TANK)  .
  4. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  5. Check LOW FUEL message operation. If system operates properly, repair is complete. If problem still exists, return to step  3.
