Rear Brake Shoes: Installation

  1. Disassembly adjuster assembly, and clean in denatured alcohol. See Figure . Clean all parts in denatured alcohol. Inspect all brake system components, and replace as necessary. Apply silicone grease (GM P/N 18010908), or equivalent, to following areas: brake shoe contact point on backing plate, adjuster threads, inside diameter of adjuster socket, hole/area on brake shoe for adjuster actuator, and pin/contact area on park brake lever.
  2. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fastener to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Ensure the following: adjuster actuator pivots in shoe web slot, notch in adjuster actuator rests on step in adjusting screw notch, and arm of adjuster actuator rests freely on star wheel teeth of adjuster screw, not trapped under teeth at downward angle. Ensure star wheel rotates properly. Measure brake drum and shoes. Adjust brakes. See REAR BRAKE SHOES  under ADJUSTMENTS.
