Front Brake Pads: Installation
- Inspect brake mounting hardware and caliper dust boot for damage, and replace if necessary. Clean outside surface of caliper piston boot with denatured alcohol. Slowly compress piston into bore with a "C" clamp, being careful not to cock piston to one side or damage piston boot. See Fig 1 .
- Install inboard pad (wear indicator will be pointing upward). Install outer pad. See Figure .
- Install sliders and pads onto caliper bracket. Install caliper. See FRONT BRAKE CALIPER . Ensure boot is not touching pad. Ensure outboard pad lays flat against caliper. Remove the 2 lug nuts that were installed to secure the rotor while the caliper was removed.
- For 2000 models, install Brake Pedal Effort Gauge (J-28662) onto brake pedal, and apply approximately 175 lbs. (79 kg) 3 times in order to seat pads, then go to next step. For 2001 models, ensure engine is off, and apply brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of travel distance. Slowly release brake pedal. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat until firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
- Install wheel/tire assembly, aligning marks made during removal. Tighten wheel lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Lower vehicle. Fill brake fluid reservoir.
- Select smooth road with little or no traffic. Burnish braking surface by making 20 firm stops, every 15 seconds, at 30 mph (48 km/h). Do not overheat brakes.
CAUTION:
Service kits include specific right hand and left hand inboard pads. When installing front brake pads, the pads with the wear indicators MUST be installed in the inboard position (against the piston) in the brake caliper. See Figure
. When the proper inboard pad is installed, the wear indicator will point upward with the caliper installed on the car.
