Test 5: Speedometer &/Or Odometer Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, perform SPEED GAUGE SWEEP TEST. If speedometer does not sweep as commanded, go to step  4 . If speedometer sweeps as commanded, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Using scan tool, observe Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) parameter in Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) DATA list while driving vehicle. If vehicle speed reading is not active, go to step  5 . If vehicle speed reading is active, check for poor connections and intermittent conditions.
  4. Replace instrument cluster.
  5. Check for open or short in Dark Green/White wire (VSS circuit) between instrument cluster and powertrain control module. If problem exists, repair as necessary. If problem does not exist, perform powertrain on-board diagnostic system check. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
