Description & Operation

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives battery positive voltage from the left instrument panel junction block IPC/HVAC BATT fuse at terminal A1. The IPC receives ignition voltage from the left instrument panel junction block IPC/BFC ACC fuse at terminal B9. The IPC receives ground at terminals A4 and B10. The IPC receives all Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) serial data messages at terminal A9 from the Body Control Module (BCM). The IPC transmits all SPI serial data messages to the BCM from terminal A2. The SPI clock which controls the communication timing between the BCM and the IPC on circuit No. 1323 at terminal A10.

The IPC uses the SPI serial data to light the various indicators and control the coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) signal is received from Powertrain Control Module (PCM) at terminal A8. Tachometer signal is received from PCM at terminal A7. The SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator signal is received from the PCM at terminal B11. The left and right turn signal indicators are hard wired to appropriate circuit. Instrument cluster illumination signal is controlled by the lamp dimmer module at terminal A5.
