Test A: Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate/Inoperative

  1. Test drive vehicle. If speedometer operates properly, go to next step. If speedometer does not work properly, repair speedometer as necessary. See TEST C: SPEEDOMETER GAUGE &/OR ODOMETER INACCURATE/INOPERATIVE  .
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness connector. ECT sensor is located on top left side of engine. Connect Instrument Panel Tester (J-33431-C) between ground and ECT sensor harness connector terminal "C" (Dark Green wire). Set instrument panel tester to 44 ohms. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If coolant temperature gauge moves to 260°F (125°C), go to next step. If coolant temperature gauge does not move to 260°F (125°C), go to step  8 .
  3. Set instrument panel tester to 1365 ohms. If coolant temperature gauge moves to 100°F (37°C), go to next step. If coolant temperature gauge does not move to 100°F (37°C), go to step  5 .
  4. Check for poor connection at ECT sensor harness connector. If concern exists, repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If concern does not exist, replace ECT sensor. Recheck system operation. If concern still exists after repairs, go to next step.
  5. Check for poor connection or short to voltage in Dark Green wire between ECT sensor terminal "C" and instrument cluster harness connector terminal D12. See Fig 1 . If concern exists, go to next step. If concern does not exist, go to step  7 .
  6. Repair short to voltage in Dark Green wire between ECT sensor and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Recheck system operation. If concern still exists, go to next step.
  7. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation. If concern still exists, go to step  9 .
  8. Check for poor connection, open or short to ground in Dark Green wire between ECT sensor terminal "C" and instrument cluster harness connector terminal D12. If concern exists, go to next step. If concern does not exist, go to step  7 .
  9. Repair poor connection, open or short to ground in Dark Green wire between ECT sensor and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
