Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.

Important: Be careful not to damage the crankshaft.

2. Pry out the crankshaft front oil seal with a suitable tool such as a large screwdriver. Use care to avoid damaging the crankshaft front oil seal bore or the crankshaft front oil seal contact surfaces.
3. Inspect the crankshaft balancer and engine front cover for scratches.

Installation Procedure

- Tools Required
- J 35354-A Seal Installer





1. Lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal with lubricant GM P/N 10522497 or equivalent.
2. Install the crankshaft front oil seal in the engine front cover using the J 35354-A.
3. Tighten the bolt until the crankshaft front oil seal is seated in the engine front cover.
4. Remove the J 35354-A.
5. Coat the outside seal surface of the crankshaft balancer with lubricant GM P/N 1050169 or equivalent.
6. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
7. Inspect for leaks.
8. Perform the CKP system variation learn procedure. Refer to CKP System Variation Learn Procedure in Computers and Controls.
