Valve Lifter Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the valve rocker arm cover(s). Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Left) and/ or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Right).
2. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper) or Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
3. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper) or Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
4. Remove the rocker arm bolt(s), the valve rocker arm(s) and the guide plate(s). Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.

Important: Make sure that all valve train parts are kept in order so that they can be reinstalled in their original locations and with the same mating surfaces as when removed.

5. Remove the pushrod(s).

6. Remove the valve lifter guide retainer bolts.
7. Remove the valve lifter guide(s).
8. Remove the valve lifter(s).
9. Clean all gasket surfaces with degreaser.
10. Clean the valve train parts.
11. Inspect the valve lifters and cam lobes for wear. Refer to Valve Lifters and Guides Clean and Inspect.

Installation Procedure

1. Dip the valve lifter(s) in prelube GM P/N 12345501 or equivalent before installation.
2. Install the valve lifter(s) to the same position the valve lifter(s) was removed from.
3. Install the valve lifter guide(s).

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the valve lifter guide retainer bolts.
Tighten the valve lifter guide retainer bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

5. Install the pushrod(s).
6. Install the guide plate(s), the valve rocker arm(s) and the bolt(s). Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
7. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper) or Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
8. Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper) or Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
9. Install the valve rocker arm cover(s). Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Left) and/or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement (Right).
