Test 3: Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate/Inoperative
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sender harness connector. Connect one lead of Gauge Tester (J-33431-B) to terminal "A" (Dark Green wire) at engine coolant temperature sender harness connector. Connect other lead to ground. Turn ignition on. Set resistance dial on tester to 1305 ohms, then to 49.5 ohms. Coolant temperature gauge should indicate cold (100°F or less for gasoline; 160°F or less for diesel) at 1305 ohms and hot (about 260°F) at 49.5 ohms. If coolant temperature gauge responds as specified, go to next step. If coolant temperature gauge does not respond as specified, go to step 3.
- Replace engine coolant temperature sender.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. Using a 10-amp fused jumper wire, connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 22 at instrument cluster (component side). See Figure. Connect one lead of Gauge Tester (J-33431-B) to terminal No. 13 (Dark Green wire) at instrument cluster (component side). Connect other lead to ground. Set resistance dial on tester to 1305 ohms, then to 49.5 ohms. Coolant temperature gauge should indicate cold (100°F or less for gasoline; 160°F or less for diesel) at 1305 ohms and hot (about 260°F) at 49.5 ohms. If coolant temperature gauge responds as specified, go to next step. If coolant temperature gauge does not respond as specified, go to step 5.
- Repair open or short in Dark Green wire between engine coolant temperature sender and instrument cluster.
- Replace instrument cluster.
