"P" Series With Transmission-Mounted Parking Brake

  1. Raise and support rear of vehicle. For manual parking brake, perform steps  2 and  3 (preferred method), or step  4 (alternate method). For automatic parking brake, perform steps  2,  3,  5 and  6 (preferred method), or steps  4,  5 and 6 ) (alternate method).
  2. Remove drive shaft. Install parking brake drum over first rivet section of brake shoes. Insert .010" (.25 mm) shims between both shoes and drum, spaced 140-180 degrees apart.
  3. Rotate adjuster screw until no clearance exists. Remove shims. Install drum and drive shaft. Drum should rotate freely with light drag.
  4. Rotate adjuster screw through hole in drum until brake just locks up. Back off adjuster screw 2-4 notches. Drum should spin freely with light drag.
  5. Block wheels. Turn ignition on. Move shift lever to Neutral. Loosen parking brake jam nut on actuator. Adjust cable fitting to remove slack. Tighten jam nut. Move shift lever to Park.
  6. While moving shift lever from Park to Neutral, check actuator cable/piston rod stroke. If stroke is not 1.20" (30 mm) to 1.44" (37 mm), recheck parking brake adjustment. Remove wheel blocks. Check parking brake operation and holding ability. Repeat procedure if necessary.
