Some Or All Instrument Cluster Illumination Lights Inoperative

  1. Operate turn signals. If turn signal indicator lights illuminate properly, go to next step. If turn signal indicator lights do not illuminate properly, go to step  6 .
  2. Set headlight switch in park position. Set instrument panel dimmer switch to maximum brightness. If A/C-heater control illumination lights illuminate, go to next step. If A/C-heater control illumination lights do not illuminate, locate and repair problem in interior light dimming system. See appropriate wiring diagram in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article.
  3. Turn headlight switch off. Disconnect instrument cluster Black 18-pin connector C2. Set headlight switch in park position. Set instrument panel dimmer switch to maximum brightness. Using DVOM, check voltage between instrument cluster harness connector C2, terminal "I" (Gray wire) and ground. If reading is 9-14 volts, go to next step. If reading is not 9-14 volts, go to step  5 .
  4. Check illumination bulb(s) and bulb connection. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If bulbs and bulb connection are okay, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
  5. Repair poor connection or open in circuit No. 8 (Gray wire) between instrument cluster connector C2 and splice S203 (located in instrument panel harness under right side of instrument panel, about 4" from radio breakout). Recheck system operation.
  6. Check for open or poor connection in circuit No. 1450 (Black wire) between instrument cluster connector C2 terminal "O" and ground. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If circuit is okay, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
