Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Attempt to establish communications with Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If scan tool communicates with IPC, go to step  3 . If scan tool does not communicate with IPC, go to next step.
  2. Check IPC power and ground circuits for opens or shorts. See appropriate wiring diagrams in POWER DISTRIBUTION and GROUND DISTRIBUTION articles in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary and attempt to establish communications with Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If scan tool communicates with IPC, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with IPC, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH IPC under SYSTEM TESTS in MULTI-FUNCTION ALARM MODULES - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article.
  3. Use scan tool to retrieve DTCs. If DTCs are present, perform appropriate test. See ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS - CAVALIER & SUNFIRE article. If DTCs are not present, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe indicators on IPC. If all indicators operate properly, system is operating properly at this time. If indicators do not operate properly, go to next step.
  5. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
