Rear Brake Drum: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 31 other vehicles, including the 1999 Pontiac Montana, 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette, 1999 Oldsmobile Bravada, 1999 GMC Yukon, and 1999 GMC Suburban. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Apply light coat of bearing lubricant to axle tube. Install hub and brake drum assembly. Install washer and adjusting nut. Using Wheel Bearing Nut Wrench (J-2222-C), tighten adjusting nut to 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m), while turning hub and rotor assembly. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. For installation of drum on 10 1/2" Saginaw axle, perform steps  3 and  4 . For installation of drum on 11" Dana axle, perform steps  5 and  6 .
  3. Back off adjusting nut until just loose, then tighten until nut's inboard face contacts outer bearing cone shoulder (torque on nut must be zero or finger-tight).
  4. Insert key into adjusting nut slot. If slot is in alignment with axle spindle keyway, loosen nut slightly but not more than one slot to align key. Install retaining ring. Install axle shaft. Tighten axle shaft bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install wheel. Lower vehicle.
  5. Back off adjusting nut and tighten to 30-40 ft. lbs. (41-54 N.m) while turning hub and rotor assembly. Back off adjusting nut 135-150 degrees. Install lock washer and lock nut finger tight. Bend lock washer tab over adjusting nut flat at a minimum angle of 30 degrees.
  6. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Bend lock washer tab over lock nut flat at a minimum angle of 60 degrees. Install axle shaft and wheel. Lower vehicle.
