Shift Selector Indicator Malfunctioning

  1. If any shift selector indicators illuminate properly, go to next step. If no shift selector indicators illuminate properly, go to step 29).
  2. If some but not all shift selector indicators illuminate properly, go to step 9). If shift selector indicators illuminate properly, go to next step.
  3. If shift selector indicators change intensity when headlight switch is in parking light position, go to next step. If shift selector indicators do not change intensity when headlight switch is in parking light position, go to step 5).
  4. Shift selector indicator system is operating properly at this time.
  5. Disconnect instrument cluster Natural 18-pin connector C1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn headlight switch to OFF position. Using DVOM, check voltage between instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal "L" (Gray/Black wire) and ground. If reading is zero volts, go to next step. If reading is not zero volts, go to step 8).
  6. Move headlight switch to park position. Check voltage between instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal "L" (Gray/Black wire) and ground. If reading is 9-14 volts, go to step 20). If reading is not 9-14 volts, go to next step.
  7. Repair poor connection or open in circuit No. 308 (Gray/Black wire) between instrument cluster connector C1 and splice S223 (located in instrument panel harness under left side of instrument panel, about 2" from radio and rear window wiper/washer multifunction switch breakout). Recheck system operation.
  8. Repair short to voltage in circuit No. 308 (Gray/Black wire) between instrument cluster connector C1 and splice S223 (located in instrument panel harness under left side of instrument panel, about 2" from radio and rear window wiper/washer multifunction switch breakout). Recheck system operation.
  9. Move shift selector to Park. Disconnect transaxle range switch Natural 4-pin connector C2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "A" (White wire) and ground. Connect another 3-amp fused jumper wire between transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "D" (Black/White wire) and ground. If Park ("P") indicator illuminates, go to next step. If Park ("P") indicator does not illuminate, go to step 12).
  10. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "B" (Yellow wire) and ground. Connect another 3-amp fused jumper wire between transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "C" (Gray wire) and ground. If Drive ("D") indicator illuminates, go to next step. If Drive ("D") indicator does not illuminate, go to step 21).
  11. Adjust or repair transaxle range switch. See procedures in TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in AUTO TRANS SERVICE section. Recheck system operation.
  12. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster Natural 18-pin connector C1. Check for poor connection or open in circuit No. 776 (White wire) between instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal "D", underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "A". If circuit is not okay, go to next step. If circuit is okay, go to step 14).
  13. Repair poor connection or open in circuit No. 776 (White wire) between instrument cluster connector C1, underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch connector C2. Recheck system operation.
  14. Check for poor connection or open in circuit No. 771 (Black/White wire) between instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal "J", underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "D". If circuit is not okay, go to next step. If circuit is okay, go to step 16).
  15. Repair poor connection or open in circuit No. 771 (Black/White wire) between instrument cluster connector C1, underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch connector C2. Recheck system operation.
  16. Check for short to ground in circuit No. 772 (Yellow wire) between instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal "C", underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "B". If circuit is not okay, go to next step. If circuit is okay, go to step 18).
  17. Repair short to ground in circuit No. 772 (Yellow wire) between instrument cluster connector C1, underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch connector C2. Recheck system operation.
  18. Disconnect instrument cluster Black 18-pin connector C2. Check for short to ground in circuit No. 773 (Gray wire) between instrument cluster harness connector C2, terminal "M", underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "C". If circuit is not okay, go to next step. If circuit is okay, go to step 20).
  19. Repair short to ground in circuit No. 773 (Gray wire) between instrument cluster connector C2, underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch connector C2. Recheck system operation.
  20. Replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
  21. Ensure shift selector is still in Park and transaxle range switch connector C2 is still disconnected. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster Natural 18-pin connector C1. Check for poor connection or open in circuit No. 772 (Yellow wire) between instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal "C", underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "B". If circuit is not okay, go to next step. If circuit is okay, go to step 23).
  22. Repair poor connection or open in circuit No. 772 (Yellow wire) between instrument cluster connector C1, underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch connector C2. Recheck system operation.
  23. Disconnect instrument cluster Black 18-pin connector C2. Check for poor connection or open in circuit No. 773 (Gray wire) between instrument cluster harness connector C2, terminal "M", underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "C". If circuit is not okay, go to next step. If circuit is okay, go to step 25).
  24. Repair poor connection or open in circuit No. 773 (Gray wire) between instrument cluster connector C2, underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch connector C2. Recheck system operation.
  25. Move shift selector to Drive. Ensure ignition switch is in LOCK position. Check for short to ground in circuit No. 771 (Black/White wire) between instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal "J", underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "D". If circuit is not okay, go to next step. If circuit is okay, go to step 27).
  26. Repair short to ground in circuit No. 771 (Black/White wire) between instrument cluster connector C1, underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch connector C2. Recheck system operation.
  27. Check for short to ground in circuit No. 776 (White wire) between instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal "D", underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "A". If circuit is not okay, go to next step. If circuit is okay, go to step 20).
  28. Repair short to ground in circuit No. 776 (White wire) between instrument cluster connector C1, underhood accessory wiring junction block and transaxle range switch connector C2. Recheck system operation.
  29. Check PRNDL fuse (10-amp), located in fuse block. If fuse is open, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step 31).
  30. Repair short to ground in circuit No. 1020 (Pink wire) between instrument cluster connector C1, terminal "K" and fuse block. Recheck system operation.
  31. Disconnect instrument cluster Natural 18-pin connector C1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using DVOM, check voltage between instrument cluster harness connector C1, terminal "K" (Pink wire) and ground. If reading is 9-14 volts, go to step 33). If reading is not 9-14 volts, go to next step.
  32. Repair poor connection or open in circuit No. 1020 (Pink wire) between instrument cluster connector C1, terminal "K" and fuse block. Recheck system operation.
  33. Move shift selector to Park. Disconnect transaxle range switch Natural 4-pin connector C2. Using DVOM, check voltage between transaxle range switch harness connector C2, terminal "A" (White wire) and battery voltage. If reading is 9-14 volts, go to step 20). If reading is not 9-14 volts, go to next step.
  34. Check for poor connection or open in circuit No. 451 (Black/White wire) between transaxle range switch Gray 7-pin connector C1, terminal "D", underhood accessory wiring junction block and ground. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If circuit is okay, replace transaxle range switch. Recheck system operation.
