Fuel Gauge & Wiring Harness Operational Test

  1. Disconnect fuel tank sending unit harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If fuel gauge indicates "E" (empty), turn ignition off and go to next step. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, repair short circuit in wiring harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  2. Connect a 12-volt 3.4-watt test light between fuel sending unit harness connector terminals No. 1 and 2. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Test light should come on and fuel gauge needle should move toward "F" (full). If test light does not come on and fuel gauge needle does not move, go to next step. If test light comes on and fuel gauge needle moves, fuel gauge is operating properly at this time.
  3. Check wiring harness for open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair wiring harness as necessary. If wiring harness checks okay, perform FUEL GAUGE RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS  .
