ECT Gauge & Wiring Harness Operational Test

  1. Disconnect ECT sending unit harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If ECT gauge indicates "C" (cool), turn ignition off and go to next step. If ECT gauge does not indicate cool, repair short circuit in wiring harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  2. Connect a 12-volt 3.4-watt test light between ground and ECT sending unit harness connector terminal. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Test light should come on and ECT gauge needle should move toward "H" (hot). If test light does not come on and ECT gauge needle does not move, perform ECT GAUGE RESISTANCE TEST. If test light comes on and ECT gauge needle moves, replace ECT sending unit.
