Fuel Gauge Always Reads Empty

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Disconnect fuel level sensor on top of fuel tank. If gauge moves toward FULL, replace fuel level sensor. If gauge remains on EMPTY, go to next step.
  2. Using a test light, backprobe instrument cluster connector terminal No. 16 (Purple wire) to battery power. See Figure. If test light does not light, go to next step. If test light lights, repair short to ground in Purple wire between instrument cluster connector and fuel level sensor.
  3. Using a test light, backprobe instrument cluster connector terminal No. 31 (Black/White wire) to battery power. See Figure. If test light lights, check instrument cluster printed circuit. If printed circuit is okay, replace fuel gauge. If test light does not light, repair open in Black/White wire between instrument cluster connector and splice.
