Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR)
The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint
(SIR) helps supplement the protection offered by the driver's seat belt by deploying an air bag front the center of the
steering wheel during certain frontal crashes. The air bag deploys when the vehicle is involved in a frontal crash of sufficient force up to 30 degrees off the centerline of the vehicle. The
steering column is collapsible and should be inspected after an accident whether or not a deployment has occurred. The SIR system components in the steering wheel and steering columns are the inflatable restraint steering wheel module and the SIR coil.
