Fuel Gauge Indicates Empty When There Is Fuel In Tank (Single Tank)

  1. Disconnect fuel pump/sender connector (gasoline) or fuel gauge sender connector (diesel). Turn ignition on. If fuel gauge indicates empty, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, replace fuel pump/sender (gasoline) or fuel gauge sender (diesel).
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Connect a test light between instrument cluster connector terminal No. 16 (Purple wire) and ground. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, repair short to ground in Purple wire between instrument cluster and VCM (gasoline) or in Purple wire between instrument cluster and fuel gauge sender (diesel). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step (gasoline) or replace instrument cluster (diesel).
  3. Connect test light between VCM 32-pin connector C3 (Clear) terminal No. 13 (Purple/White wire) and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, repair short to ground in Purple/White wire between VCM and fuel pump/sender. If test light does not illuminate, replace instrument cluster.
