General Information
The working angle of a universal joint is the difference between the angle formed when two shafts intersect. In order for proper cancellation to take place, the two angles should be equal to within 1/2 of a degree, the angles themselves should not exceed 4° and should not be equal to zero. If the angle were to equal zero the needle bearing within the universal joint would not rotate causing premature wear of the universal joint.Adding one shim at the transmission will decrease the transmission-universal joint angle by a 1/2° and increase differential joint angle by 1/4°. If one shim is removed, the transmission angle will increase 1/2° and decrease differential angle 1/4°. The production transmission mount bolt is a M10 - 1.5 x 30 mm. When installing two or more shims, a M10 - 1.5 x 50 mm.
All vehicles with propeller shaft vibration complaints should be checked for correct rear trim height measurements at curb weight. A incorrect trim height may cause some vibration. If any irregular roughness or vibration is detected in the driveline, front and rear universal joint angles should be checked. If a vehicle is involved in a severe rear end collision, or if the rear axle housing is replaced, the rear universal joint angle should be checked and corrected if necessary.
