Propeller Shaft Balance Check
REMOVE OR DISCONNECTNOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the correct location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The Manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The Manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHER WISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors) on the threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and the joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.
1. Place the vehicle on twin post hoist so that vehicle is supported on rear axle housing and rear wheels are free to rotate.
2. Rear tires and wheels.
3. Install wheel nuts with flat sides against rear brake drums or rotors.
Inspect
a. Propeller shaft, universal joints, and attachments for loose fasteners, mud, or undercoating.
Clean
- Propeller shaft, universal joints, and attachments.
- Tighten Any loose attachments or fasteners to specifications. Refer to "SPECIFICATIONS."
CAUTION: Do not run the vehicle faster than 88 km/h (55 mph). Stay clear of the universal joint and balance weight areas to avoid possible personal Injury. Do not run the vehicle on the hoist for extended periods due to the danger of overheating the transmission or engine.
NOTICE: Allow the driveline components to stop rotating with the transmission in "NEUTRAL," before shifting the transmission in "PARK" or parts may be damaged.
b. Run vehicle in gear at speed where disturbance peaks. Observe intensity of disturbance.
c. Stop engine.
4. Propeller shaft from pinion gear yoke only. Refer to "PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT."
- Rotate propeller shaft 180° from original position.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Propeller shaft to pinion gear yoke. Refer to "PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT."
2. Remove wheel nuts.
3. Tires and wheels.
4. Determine position that gives best driveline response by road testing vehicle for final check of propeller shaft balance.
5. If balance is unacceptable, refer to "PROPELLER SHAFT BALANCING."
