Balance Shaft - Removal






1. Recover the refrigerant. See Heating and Air Conditioning.
2. Remove the radiator with the A/C condenser. See Cooling System.
3. Remove the rear oil seal housing.
4. Remove the upper intake manifold.
5. Remove the lower intake manifold.
6. Remove the valve lifter guide retainer.
7. Remove the engine front cover.
8. Remove the balance shaft gear bolt.
9. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
10. Remove the balance shaft driven gear.
11. Remove the balance shaft retainer bolts.
12. Remove the balance shaft retainer.
13. Remove the balance shaft gear.

CAUTION: The balance shaft, front bearing, and rear bushing are serviced as a complete package. Use only the correct tools for bearing, bushing, and shaft installation.

14. Remove the balance shaft. Use the Slide Hammer.
15. Remove the balance shaft rear bushing. Use the Balance Shaft Rear Bushing installer.
16. Inspect the balance shaft gear and camshaft gear for nicks and burrs.
