Rear Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

Tool Required, or equivalent: J38196 Rear Main Oil Seal Installer.

REMOVAL
1. Remove the flywheel. See Transmission and Drivetrain.

CAUTION: Do not nick the crankshaft sealing surface when removing the seal.





2. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal.
a. Insert a screwdriver or similar tool through the dust lip at an angle.
b. Pry the seal out by moving the handle of tool towards the end of crankshaft.
c. Repeat as necessary around the seal.

INSTALLATION
1. Coat the new seal entirely with engine oil.





2. Install the seal onto the Rear Main Oil Seal Installer.
3. Install the Rear Main Oil Seal Installer onto the rear of the crankshaft.
4. Tighten the screws snugly in order to ensure that the seal will be installed squarely over the crankshaft.
5. Tighten the wing nut on the Rear Main Oil Seal Installer, until it bottoms.
6. Remove the Rear Main Oil Seal Installer from the crankshaft.
7. Install the flywheel. See Transmission and Drivetrain.
