Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 GMC Pickup and 1997 Chevrolet Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK. See the F - BASIC TESTING - 5.0L article. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Install scan tool. Start and run engine for greater than 2 minutes. Ensure engine is operating at normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If short term fuel trim indicates a change of greater than 6 percent within 30 seconds, go to next step. If short term fuel trim does not indicate a change of greater than 6 percent within 30 seconds, go to step 4).
  3. DTC is intermittent. If no additional DTCs are set, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS. If any additional DTCs are set, go to applicable DTC test.
  4. With engine still running, using scan tool, command AIR pump on. Observe AIR pump clutch. If AIR pump clutch is engaged, go to next step. If AIR pump clutch is not engaged, go to step 6).
  5. With engine still running, using scan tool, command AIR pump off. Observe AIR pump clutch. If AIR pump clutch is engaged, go to step 7). If AIR pump clutch is not engaged, go to step 25).
  6. Remove AIR relay. Connect test light between ground and ignition feed circuit of AIR relay connector (engine harness side). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 14).
  7. Connect test light between battery voltage and AIR relay control circuit of AIR relay connector (engine harness side). If test light illuminates, go to step 17). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  8. Connect test light between battery voltage and AIR relay control circuit of AIR relay connector (engine harness side). Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If test light illuminates, go to step 10). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 15).
  9. Connect fused jumper wire between battery voltage and AIR pump clutch control circuit of AIR relay connector (engine harness side). If AIR pump clutch is engaged, go to step 20). If AIR pump clutch is not engaged, go to step 11).
  10. Connect test light between ground and AIR pump clutch control circuit of AIR relay connector (engine harness side). If test light illuminates, go to step 22). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 9).
  11. Check for open in AIR pump clutch control circuit. If a problem was found, go to step 24). If a problem was not found, go to next step.
  12. Check for open in AIR pump ground circuit. If a problem was found, go to step 24). If a problem was not found, go to next step.
  13. Check for open in AIR pump clutch coil. If a problem was found, go to step 24). If a problem was not found, go to step 2).
  14. Check for open fuse in AIR ignition feed circuit. If a problem was found, go to step 18). If a problem was not found, go to step 19).
  15. Check for open in AIR relay control circuit. If a problem was found, go to step 24). If a problem was not found, go to next step.
  16. Check for poor terminal contact at VCM AIR relay control circuit terminal. If a problem was found, go to step 24). If a problem was not found, go to step 23).
  17. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Blue VCM connector. Connect test light between battery voltage and AIR relay control circuit of AIR relay connector (engine harness side). If test light illuminates, go to step 21). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 23).
  18. Repair short to ground in AIR relay ignition feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 28).
  19. Repair open in AIR relay ignition feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 28).
  20. Replace AIR relay. After replacing relay, go to step 28).
  21. Repair short to ground in AIR relay control circuit. After repairs, go to step 28).
  22. Repair short to voltage in AIR pump clutch control circuit. After repairs, go to step 28).
  23. Replace VCM. Program replacement VCM using required equipment. After replacing VCM, go to step 28).
  24. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 28).
  25. Disconnect AIR pump output hose at AIR valve. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. Accelerate engine and observe airflow coming from hose. If airflow increases as engine is accelerated, go to step 26). If airflow does not increase as engine is accelerated, go to step 27).
  26. Check for worn or loose AIR pump drive belt. Check for leaks or restrictions in AIR pipes, hoses and fittings. If a problem was found, go to step 24). If a problem was not found, go to step 2).
  27. Replace AIR pump. After replacing pump, go to step 28).
  28. Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter DTC P0410. Operate vehicle within the conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, repeat step 2).
  29. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO. If any undiagnosed DTC(s) are displayed, go to applicable DTC test.
