Fuel Gauge Indicates Empty When There Is Fuel In Tank (Single Tank - 4.3L)

  1. Disconnect fuel pump and sender connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between fuel pump and sender terminals "A" (Purple/White wire) and "D" (Black wire). If resistance is more than 300 ohms, replace fuel pump and sender. If resistance is less than 300 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect fuel tank sender module. If fuel gauge indicates full, go to step  4 . If fuel gauge indicates empty, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Connect self-powered test light between instrument cluster connector terminal No. 16 (Purple wire) and ground. See Figure . If test light comes on, repair short to ground in Purple wire between instrument cluster connector and fuel tank sender module. If test light does not come on, replace instrument cluster connector.
  4. Connect self-powered test light between fuel tank sender module connector terminal "C" (Purple/White wire) and ground. If test light comes on, repair short to ground in Purple/White wire between fuel tank sender module and fuel pump and sender. If test light does not come on, go to next step.
  5. Using DVOM, measure voltage between fuel tank sender module connector terminal "B" (Gray wire) and ground. If voltage reading is 4-5.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is zero, locate and repair open Purple wire between fuel tank sender module and VCM.
  6. Measure voltage between fuel tank sender module connector terminal "A" (Pink wire) and ground. If voltage reading is battery voltage, replace fuel tank sender module. If voltage reading is zero, locate and repair open Pink wire between fuel tank sender module and fuse.
