Clutch Master Cylinder: Service and Repair

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Air intake duct from the air cleaner.
2. Negative and then the positive battery cable from the battery.
3. Left fender brace.
4. Battery hold down clamp bolt and remove the battery.
5. M.A.T. and M.A.F sensor leads.
6. PCV pipe retaining clamp from air intake duct.
7. Clamp retaining the air intake duct to the throttle body.
8. Air cleaner bracket and M.A.F. sensor mounting bolts.
9. Air cleaner, M.A.F. sensor and air intake duct as an assembly.
10. Electrical lead at the washer bottle, attaching bolts and washer bottle
11. Cruise control mounting bracket retaining nuts from the strut tower (if equipped).
12. Sound insulator from inside the vehicle
13. Clutch master cylinder pushrod from the clutch pedal.
14. Clutch master cylinder retaining nuts at front of dash.
15. Actuator cylinder retaining nuts at the transaxle.
16. Hydraulic system as a unit from the vehicle.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Actuator cylinder to transaxle support bracket and align the pushrod into the pocket on the lever. Do not remove the plastic pushrod retainer from the actuator cylinder. The straps will break on the first clutch pedal application.
2. Actuator cylinder nuts and tighten evenly to 22 Nm (16 lbs ft).
3. Clutch master cylinder to the front of dash and tighten retaining nuts evenly to 21 Nm (16 lbs ft).
4. Remove the pedal restrictor from the pushrod. Lubricate pushrod bushing on clutch pedal. Connect pushrod to the clutch pedal and install the retaining clip.

CAUTION: If equipped with cruise control, check switch adjustment at clutch pedal bracket. When adjusting cruise control switch, do not exert an upward force on the clutch pedal pad of more than 89 N (20 lbs.) or damage to master cylinder pushrod retaining ring may result.

5. Sound insulator.
6. Press the clutch pedal down several times. This will break the plastic retaining straps on the actuator cylinder pushrod. Do not remove the plastic button on the end of the pushrod.
7. Washer bottle and electrical connection.
8. Air cleaner, M.A.F. sensor and air intake duct.
9. Air cleaner bracket and M.A.F sensor mounting bolts.
10. Clamp retaining the air intake duct to the throttle body.
11. PCV pipe retaining clamp to air intake duct.
12. M.A.F. and M.A.T. sensor leads.
13. Battery.
14. Left fender brace.
15. Positive battery cable then negative battery cable.
16. Air intake duct to air cleaner.
