Coolant Temperature Gauge Accuracy Test

  1. Disconnect temperature gauge sending unit. Connect Red lead of Gauge Tester (J-33431) to Dark Green or Dark Green/White wire of temperature gauge electrical connector and remaining lead to ground.
  2. Turn ignition on. On Beretta and Corsica, adjust gauge tester resistance dials first to 1310 ohms, then to 37 ohms. Temperature gauge should indicate cold then hot. On Camaro and Lumina, adjust gauge tester resistance dials first to 1365 ohms, then to 42 ohms (Camaro) or 55 ohms (Lumina). Temperature gauge should indicate cold then hot. On Caprice, adjust gauge tester resistance dials first to 1400 ohms, then to 55 ohms. Temperature gauge should indicate cold then hot. On Cavalier, adjust gauge tester resistance dials first to 1365 ohms, then 94 ohms and finally 63 ohms. Temperature gauge should indicate cold, medium and hot.
  3. On all models, if gauge operation is incorrect, check for proper connections and/or excessive resistance in wiring to IPC. Replace temperature gauge or IPC if wiring and connections are okay. If gauge operation is correct, replace temperature sending unit.
