Fuel Gauge Accuracy Test

  1. Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit wiring connector. Connect Red lead of Gauge Tester (J-33431) to specified wire and remaining lead to other specified wire or ground. See FUEL GAUGE ACCURACY TEST CONNECTIONS table.

    Beretta, Camaro & Corsica Purple & Black Wire
    Caprice Purple Wire & Ground
    Cavalier & Lumina Purple & Black/White Wire
  2. Turn ignition on and adjust resistance dials of tester to zero ohms and then to 90 ohms. Note if gauge reads empty, then full. If gauge operates correctly, check IPC and fuel gauge sending unit ground wires for excessive resistance. If wiring is okay, replace fuel gauge sending unit.
  3. If gauge fails to operate correctly, check wires to instrument panel for excessive resistance and improper connection. If wiring and connections are okay, replace IPC.
