Crankshaft & Main Bearings

  1. If bearing clearance is greater than specification, replace with undersized upper and lower bearings. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. Recheck bearing clearance using Plastigage.
  2. Tighten main bearing caps, except rear main cap, to specification. Tighten rear main cap to specification. Tap crankshaft rearward and then forward using lead hammer. This will align rear main bearing with crankshaft and thrust surfaces. Retighten all main bearing caps to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
