Transmission Reassembly
NOTE:
Use thread sealant on all bolt threads. Lubricate all parts with transmission gear oil as they are being installed.
- Lower countergear into case until it rests on bottom of case. Place reverse idler gear in transmission case, with gear teeth toward front.
- Install reverse idler gear shaft into case from rear. Ensure slot in end of shaft faces down. Shaft slot face must be at least flush with case.
- Install mainshaft assembly into case, with rear of shaft protruding out rear bearing hole in case. Position Bearing Installer (J-22874-5) in countershaft case opening, and engage front of mainshaft. See Fig 1. Rotate case onto front end.
- Install 1st gear thrust washer on shaft, if not previously installed. Install retaining ring on bearing outside diameter, and position rear mainshaft bearing on shaft.
- Using Bearing Installer (J-22874-1), install bearing until retaining ring is flush with case. See Fig 1. Rotate case, and remove tool. Install 4th gear synchronizer ring. Ensure 3 cut-out sections align with synchronizer keys.
- Ensure main drive gear pilot roller bearings are in place. Install main drive gear with cutout facing down. Tap on outer bearing race to install assembly.
- Install drive gear bearing retainer and NEW gasket. Install Countergear Support (J-22874-10) into countergear front bearing opening in case. See Fig 2. Rotate case onto front end.
- Install NEW retaining ring on countergear rear bearing. Position bearing on countergear, and use Bearing Installer (J-22874-1) to seat bearing. See Fig 3. Ensure retaining ring is flush with case. Rotate case, and install NEW retaining ring on countershaft at rear bearing.
- Remove countergear support. See Fig 2. Tap countergear front bearing assembly into case. Install countergear front bearing cap and NEW gasket. Slide speedometer drive gear over mainshaft, to bearing.
- Install rear bearing retainer with NEW gasket. On 4WD models, install parking brake backing plate and NEW mainshaft lock nut; tighten lock nut using Main Bearing Lock Nut Socket (J-23070). See Figure. On all models, tighten lock nut.
- Place transmission gears in Neutral position. Partially engage reverse idler gear with countergear, and move reverse shift fork an equal distance in shift cover.
- Install cover and shift fork assembly onto transmission. Reverse shift fork should enter case first. Ensure 1st-2nd and 3rd-4th shift forks engage synchronizer collars. Install cover bolts. Lock transmission in 2 gears at once. Tighten yoke nut. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
