Brake Rotor & Hub Assembly: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 1990 GMC Suburban, 1990 GMC Pickup, 1990 GMC Jimmy, 1990 GMC Cab & Chassis, and 1990 Chevrolet Suburban. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove brake caliper from mounting anchor plate and support aside. DO NOT allow caliper to hang by brake hose. Remove locking hub assembly. See appropriate LOCKING HUBS in this article.
  2. Using Wheel Bearing Nut Wrench (J-26878-A ) on V30/3500 or (J-6893-D ) on all others, remove wheel bearing lock nut, ring and adjusting nut. See Figure . Remove hub assembly and outer wheel bearing from spindle. Using a brass drift, remove inner wheel bearing and grease seal by tapping out with hammer.
  3. If bearing(s) and/or race(s) require replacement, press races out with arbor press or they may be driven out. To drive out races, insert brass drift, through hub, behind race. Using hammer, strike drift (alternating on each side of race) until race is removed.
