Wheel Bearing

  1. Remove locking hub. See appropriate LOCKING HUBS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  in this article. Remove wheel bearing lock nut and ring. See Figure . To seat bearings, tighten adjusting nut to 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m) while rotating hub.
  2. Back off adjusting nut. Rotate hub and retighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 N.m) on automatic hubs or 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m) on manual hubs. Back off adjusting nut enough to free bearing on manual hubs, or 3/8 turn maximum on automatic hubs.
  3. On automatic and manual locking hubs, install ring and whCeel bearing lock nut. Ensure hole in ring aligns with pin on lock nut (move adjusting nut to align pin). Install and tighten wheel bearing lock nut to 160 ft. lbs. (217 N.m).
  4. Hub and rotor assembly end play should be .001-.010" (.03-.25 mm). If not to specification, repeat adjustment procedure. If end play is within specification, install locking hub assembly.
