Lower Ball Joint

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1990 GMC Suburban, 1990 GMC Pickup, 1990 GMC Cab & Chassis, 1990 Chevrolet Suburban, and 1990 Chevrolet Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Lower ball joint wear may be checked without ball stud disassembly. To check lower ball joint, raise and support vehicle at wheel and hub with jack stand.
  2. Measure distance between top of ball joint stud and tip of lower grease fitting. See Figure . Move support to lower control arm and allow wheel and hub to hang free.
  3. Recheck distance. If difference exceeds .094" (2.38 mm), replace ball joint. Inspect lower ball joint rubber grease seal for cuts or tears. Replace ball joint if damage is found.
