Timing Belt & Sprockets: Installation

  1. Install crankshaft timing pulley making sure that Woodruff key is positioned correctly. Mount pulley on crankshaft. Align crankshaft pulley timing groove with mark on oil pump.
  2. Make sure camshaft pulley timing mark is aligned with upper surface of cylinder head and dowel pins is in up position. Set timing belt arrow in direction of engine rotation and install crankshaft, camshaft timing pulley, water pump pulley and tension pulley (in that order).
    NOTE: There must be no slack in belt after it has been installed. The teeth of belt and pulley must be in perfect alignment.
  3. Loosen tension pulley bolt. Insert hex wrench into tension pulley hexagonal hole. Hold pulley stationary and temporarily tighten bolt. Turn crankshaft two complete revolutions and align crankshaft timing pulley groove with mark on oil pump.
  4. Loosen tension pulley bolt and apply tension to belt. Insert hex wrench into tension pulley hexagonal hole. Hold pulley stationary and tighten bolt to 36.9 ft. lbs. (50 N.m). Move crankshaft back to about 50° BTDC. Perform normal operation and set crankshaft at that position.
  5. Use drive belt tension gauge to check timing belt tension. Tension should be 37.5 +/- 4.4 lbs. (cold) for 1987 models and 44 +/- 4.4 lbs. (cold) for 1988. Check valve clearance. Clean adhering surfaces of cylinder head and head cover gasket. Make sure that all of oil and sealing materials are completely removed.
  6. Apply sealant to cylinder head. Also apply sealant to arched area (4 places for each arch) of #1 and #5 rocker brackets. Mount head cover and tighten bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (9 N.m). Mount timing cover.
  7. Install crankshaft pulley and tighten bolt to 108.5 ft. lbs. (147 N.m). Install starter and torque bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 N.m). Install engine mount bracket and tighten bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 N.m). Install engine.
