Rocker Shaft Assembly & Camshaft: Inspection

  1. Measure camshaft lobe height and journal diameter. Replace camshaft if lobes are worn beyond 1.426" (36.22 mm) or if journals are worn beyond 1.0157" (25.800 mm). Measure camshaft runout with a dial indicator. Replace camshaft if runout is more than .004" (.10 mm).
  2. Reinstall camshaft on cylinder head. Install camshaft bearing caps and tighten to specification. Measure camshaft journal oil clearance using Plastigage method. Replace cylinder head and/or camshaft if clearance is beyond specification.
  3. Install dial indicator and measure camshaft end play. Replace cylinder head and/or camshaft if end play is more than .008" (.20 mm). Measure distributor drive slot. Drive slot width should be .197" (5.00 mm).
  4. Check rocker shaft outer diameter. Minimum rocker shaft diameter is .624" (15.85 mm). Measure rocker shaft runout. Maximum runout is .016" (.40 mm).
  5. Measure rocker arm inside diameter. Subtract rocker shaft diameter from rocker arm inside diameter to obtain rocker arm-to-rocker shaft oil clearance. Maximum oil clearance is .008" (.20 mm).
