Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal

  1. On EFI Turbo models, fuel system must be depressurized before disconnecting any fuel lines or injectors. To depressurize, loosen fuel filler cap to relieve pressure from fuel tank, disable fuel pump and run engine until it dies.
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove hood from vehicle. Disconnect fuel lines. Remove air duct and air cleaner assembly. Disconnect power steering hoses. Discharge A/C system. Disconnect A/C hose assembly and plug openings.
  3. Drain cooling system. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses. Remove heater hoses at engine. Remove transaxle cooler lines on automatic transaxle models. Label and disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect clutch, select and shift cables on manual transaxle models.
  4. Disconnect speedometer cable. Disconnect distributor high tension lead. Disconnect engine electrical harness connectors. Remove battery and battery tray. Remove ground lead from valve cover. Remove engine control cables.
  5. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Disconnect tie rod ends from steering knuckles using Remover (J-21687-02). Disconnect lower ball joints from lower control arm. Loosen, but DO NOT remove, upper strut-to-body attaching bolts.
  6. Pry drive axle shafts from transaxle assembly. DO NOT damage oil seals when removing axle shafts. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from engine. Lower vehicle. Attach engine hoist to hangers on engine. Raise engine to remove weight from mounts.
  7. Remove torque rod from body. Remove right side engine mounting rubber. Remove front engine mount through bolt and nut. Remove rear engine mount through bolt. Ensure all hoses and wiring are disconnected. Remove engine with transaxle assembly.
  8. Remove engine mounts, torque rod and bracket from engine. Remove transaxle undercover. Remove main harness cable assembly. Separate transaxle from engine.
