Piston Rings Service

  1. Measure piston ring side and end clearance for all pistons and replace rings as necessary. When replacing ring in cylinder bore not needing reconditioning, check ring end gap at lower part of cylinder that is less worn.
  2. Compression ring end gap should be .010-.014" (.25-.35 mm). Oil ring end gap should be .004-.024" (.10-.60 mm). Rings are available in standard, .50 mm oversize and 1.0 mm oversize.
  3. Install oil ring first without using a ring expander. Spacer expander gap should be installed 90 degrees from side rail gaps. Rails should turn smoothly when installed. See Fig 1 .
