Upper Ball Joint: Removal

  1. Raise and support front of vehicle with jack stands positioned under lower control arms, between spring seat and ball joint. Jacks must remain under lower control arm to retain spring and control arm in position.
    NOTE: Since vehicle weight is used to relieve spring tension on upper control arm, jack stand must be positioned between spring seat and ball joint for maximum leverage.
  2. Remove wheel and tire assembly. Remove cotter pin and upper ball joint stud nut. Install Ball Joint Separator (J-23742 ) between the ball studs. Extend separator tool to loosen ball stud from knuckle. See Fig 1 .
  3. Remove separator tool. Remove stud from knuckle. Support knuckle assembly to prevent weight of assembly from damaging brake line. With control arm in raised position, drill off 4 rivet heads. Using a hammer and small punch, drive out rivets. Remove ball joint assembly.
