Lower Ball Joint: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Place adjustable jack stand under lower control arm spring seat. Remove tire and wheel assembly. Remove lower ball joint stud cotter pin and stud nut. Position Ball Joint Separator (J-23742 ) between the ball studs. See Figure .
  2. Extend separator tool to loosen stud from knuckle. Remove tool. Guide lower control arm out of opening in splash shield by using putty knife or scraper. Place a wooden block between upper control arm and frame to keep knuckle assembly out of the way. Remove grease fitting from ball joint.
  3. Install Ball Joint Remover and Installer Set (J-9519-D ), using "C" Clamp (J-9519-10 ), Adapter (J-9519-16 ) and Installer (J-9519-22 or J-21474-13 ). Turn hex head screw on clamp to press lower ball joint out of control arm bore. Remove tools and ball joint from vehicle.
