Standard Bearings

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1989 Suzuki Swift, 1989 Suzuki Sidekick, and 1989 Suzuki Samurai. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Standard main bearings are coded with a color patch and are available in 5 thickness variations. Upper half of bearing has an oil groove. An arrow mark and number are embossed on each main bearing cap. See Fig 3 .
  2. Ensure that arrow mark on main bearing cap faces toward crankshaft pulley. Bearing No. 1 is at crankshaft pulley end of engine. Bearing No. 5 is at flywheel end of engine.
  3. Crank webs of No. 2 and No. 3 cylinders have 5 stamped numbers. Journal diameter is represented by 3 numbers, "1", "2" and "3". See Fig 1 . The first, second, third, fourth and fifth stamped numbers on web indicate journal diameter of bearings. Read stamped numbers from left to right.

  4. Determine bearing cap bore diameter with bearing removed. Five letters are stamped on mating surface of cylinder block. See Fig 2 . Cap bore diameter is represented by 3 letters, "A", "B" and "C".
  5. The first, second, third, fourth and fifth stamped letters indicate the cap bore diameter of bearing caps "1", "2", "3", "4" and "5" respectively. Five thickness variations of standard main bearings are available. Each color indicates thickness at center of bearing. See Fig 3 .
  6. From number stamped on crankshaft webs of No. 2 and No. 3 cylinders and letters stamped on mating surface of cylinder block, refer to COLOR CODE FOR STANDARD BEARINGS TABLE  and determine new standard bearing to be installed on journal.
