Description & Operation

Brake system consists of a tandem master cylinder, controlling two independent diagonal hydraulic circuits. One circuit controls left front and right rear brakes. The other circuit controls right front and left rear brakes.

Hydraulic brake system uses a proportioning valve which is located in series between master cylinder and rear brakes. It is mounted on center of firewall.

When brake pedal is depressed, hydraulic pressure is applied to front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Parking brake sets rear brakes using a cable and mechanical linkage.

Front calipers are single piston/floating type, with bore size of 2.13" (54 mm) on Spectrum and 2.01" (51.1 mm) Sprint. Caliper mounts on steering knuckle with 2 bolts.

Rear drum brakes are self-adjusting. A self-adjusting brake strut, mounted between shoe webs under wheel cylinder, contains a ratcheting lever and spring which adjusts clearance between shoes and drum. Whenever clearance between shoes and drum exceeds a predetermined value, ratcheting lever will move 1 notch to compensate for lining wear.
