Fig. 19 Determining side bearing shim thickness. Chevette & 1000 models:

CHEVETTE & 1000 MODELS
This procedure is performed after drive pinion is installed.
1. Ensure that bearing bores and caps are clean and free of burrs.
2. Lightly lubricate differential case bearings, then install outer races on proper bearings. Install case assembly in housing and support to prevent falling.
3. Position ring gear tightly against drive pinion. With bearings properly seated, install service spacer A, service shim B, and feeler gauge C on ring gear side, Fig. 19. The feeler gauge thickness must be sufficient to produce a slight drag when gauge is moved between carrier and service shim.
4. Install service spacer A, service shim B, and feeler gauge C between right bearing and carrier, Fig. 19. The feeler gauge thickness must be sufficient to produce a slight drag when gauge is moved between carrier and service shim.
5. Total thickness of service spacer A, service shim B and feeler gauge C. Record the result for both sides.
6. From measurements obtained in step 5 above, subtract .010 inch from ring gear side shim pack and add .010 inch to right side shim pack to compensate for backlash. On both sides add .004 inch for side bearing preload. Refer to Fig. 19,for example.
7. Select side bearing preload shims. Do not use production cast iron preload shims as they may break during installation.
8. Install ring gear side preload shim first, then wedge right shim between bearing cup and spacer. Position shim so chamfered side is outward or next to spacer. If shim is not chamfered, file or grind chamfer prior to installation. If difficulty is encountered during shim installation, partially remove case, then slide case and shim into position. Tap shim into position with soft faced hammer while rotating case assembly.
9. Install bearing caps. Torque to 55 ft. lbs.
