Side Bearing Preload (Buick)
- Use service type adjusting shims of stamped steel type totaling same thickness as production type adjusting shims. Slip left shims into position with steel shim next to bearing, Position cast shim, using a soft hammer, Install side bearing caps, shim in position on right side and drive steel shim carefully into position between bearing and cast iron shim, using soft hammer.
- Tighten side bearing caps to specifications, Rotate assembly to seat bearings, Check bearing preload with INCH lb, torque wrench, If specified torque is not obtained, increase shim thickness by.002" on each side for each additional 10 INCH lbs, preload desired, Remove shim to reduce preload (.002" for each 10 INCH lbs, reduction).
